Disclaimer: I don’t own Viggo or Orlando, or any of the other mentioned people. It’s all for fun, no harm meant.
Summary: Viggo and Orlando reunite before the Golden Globes 2017 and they think there might be something between them.
Viggo had seen the picture. He didn’t often browse the internet, but occasionally he took a look at what his former co-stars had been up to. Hence he had seen the pictures that Orlando had posted on his Instagram account.
There were a few snapshots with their doubles, and others with Orlando goofing around. In this one picture, though, it was just him and Orlando. They were waiting on the helicopter pilot to take them up the mountain.
Viggo could remember that particular moment as though it happened only yesterday. He and Orlando had been discussing their upcoming scenes rather intently. That was why he hadn’t seen Elijah pointing his camera at them and thus looked somewhat startled. Orlando, of course, was beaming; as he had been doing most of the time during their breaks between shots.
Looking at the picture, Viggo smiled. He had such fond memories of his time in New Zealand, particularly with Orlando as company. There had always been something between them, Viggo was sure about it.
Maybe he should call him. They had stayed in touch sporadically. Sometimes, Viggo had called Orlando just to ramble on about a certain painting or a picture he had taken that day. Orlando always seemed delighted and even called back a few times, telling Viggo about some adventure he had been on.
Also, with his upcoming appearance at the Golden Globes, Viggo knew that they would be within an hour’s drive of each other. Henry had already bugged him if they could go and meet up with a few of Viggo’s former castmates.
Finally, Viggo picked up his phone and dialed Orlando’s number. It rang a few times and he was almost certain to be transferred to voice mail.
“Viggo?” Orlando sounded surprised.
“Hey, prissy elf, I just saw your pictures,” Viggo mumbled. “I’ve recently been thinking about New Zealand again and how much fun we all had. Didn’t know, back then, that Elijah was standing there, taking pictures of us… Do you remember our conversation? I always liked talking to you and gaining your input on our scenes. Peter seemed very content when we all bonded together and it bled into our work. Oh, and what are you doing around the 8th of January? I’ll take Hank to the Golden Globes, which isn’t more than an hour’s drive from your house, is it? Thought that we might meet up with the Hobbits, maybe get some dinner or something… Are you available?”
He heard a short silence on the other end of the phone. Then Orlando burst out laughing.
“Oh, Viggo, I know there was something missing from my everyday life. No one ever rumbles on about nothing and everything like you do.”
“Uhm… well…”
“Come on, don’t be like that. You know that I’ve always thought that it is exactly what makes you so amazing.”
“Will you have time, though, in January?” Viggo didn’t usually press his luck like that, but he really had to know if a meeting was possible.
“Of course, I won’t miss a reunion with you and the Hobbits! And I haven’t seen Henry in ages. I don’t even know if I’ll recognize him anymore.”
“Sure you will. But maybe call him Hank. He’s always a bit cranky otherwise.”
Orlando started laughing again. “So he takes after his father, I’d wager.”
Now Viggo was laughing as well. “Yeah, I guess you can say that. He’s pretty outspoken and doesn’t compromise on his opinions. I’m quite happy about it.”
“I’ve always thought you to be a great father, you know,” Orlando said. “In this respect – and really… in so many other areas of life – you are my role model.”
“I’m sure you’re also a great father, Orli,” Viggo replied. “How’s Flynn doing, by the way?”
“He’s doing great. By now, he also has his own head and can be quite stubborn at times. I’ll have him for an extended holiday in March. Uhm… maybe we can come over and visit you?” Orlando sounded hesitant, but Viggo wanted none of that.
“Yes, that would be great! We can go horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and maybe take Flynn kart racing. I’m sure that Hank will also find the time to join us and…”
“Viggo, stop, wait a minute!” Orlando was giggling. “Flynn’s only five years old, we’ll have to talk about it first. I’ll bring lots of old clothes and we’ll see about what we might be able to do without him falling into exhausted sleep on horseback.”
“Alright,” Viggo conceded. “I just really want to make sure the both of you will have a good time. We haven’t seen each other in a while… I’ve missed you.”
All was silent for a few heartbeats.
“I’ve missed you too, smelly human,” came Orlando’s soft reply. “And I’ll see you in January anyways. How about you guys come by a few days earlier? I’d love to catch up with you.”
“Yeah, I’ll talk to Hank. He’s at his mom’s place and will meet me in L.A. on the 8th, I think. But I’d love to come over early. Actually, I’ll call the hotel right away and see if they’re free.”
“No way! You’re going to stay with me. Are you kidding me, Viggo? You’re not staying at some hotel when we could be sitting on my terrace, drinking wine, and talking at all hours of the night. I’m not having that, Viggo. Come on by whenever you want, just let me know on the day. I’ll get something to eat and make sure the fridge is stocked accordingly.”
~~~
Viggo was impatient. He would’ve loved to go and visit Orlando right away. Yet, he held out until the 2nd of January. While at the airport of Syracuse, New York, Viggo called Orlando to let him know when he would be arriving in L.A.
“I’ll take a cab and should probably be at your house within two hours of arrival. When I’m on the way, I’ll give you a quick call.”
“Yeah, do that. I’ll make sure that we’ve got something to eat and dinner will be ready when you arrive; can’t wait to see you again.”
Viggo had to smile. “Come on, prissy elf, I’m sure you just can’t wait to harass me again.”
Orlando was laughing. “Oh, Viggo, you’ve no idea how much I’ve missed this. See you later, smelly human.”
They ended the call and Viggo was even more impatient than before.
He had trouble sitting still on the airplane, and he couldn’t have been happier to finally get through the airport in L.A. and flag down a cab.
It took nearly three hours to get to Orlando’s house, but finally Viggo stood in front of his door. He wanted to ring the bell, but in that moment the door was pulled wide open and a second later he had his arms full of Orlando.
“Hey, prissy elf, we haven’t seen each other in a while.” Viggo took a few seconds to hug Orlando to himself and get accustomed again to his smell.
“Come on in, dinner’s almost ready. We can eat on the terrace, it’s so lovely outside.”
They took the food outside and sat together on the deck chairs. Eating pasta and drinking wine, they talked for hours.
It was already early in the morning when Orlando couldn’t keep his eyes open any longer. Viggo finally shooed him inside and Orlando showed him to the guestroom.
“I’ll see you in the morning, Orli.” Viggo instinctively took a step forward to ruffle Orlando’s hair and gently shove him towards his own bedroom.
~~~
The next day, they slept in and had a late breakfast.
“What do you want to do today, Viggo?”
“Well, what would you recommend around here?”
“Uhm… we could go to the beach. But there might be some paparazzi around. Actually… those might be around almost everywhere at the moment, what with the ceremony and such…”
Viggo nodded thoughtfully. “How about we just stay here, maybe go for a walk later on?”
“Yeah, I’m sure we have so much more to talk about.” Orlando smiled, and Viggo had to keep himself from reaching out for him.
Again, they talked for hours, not getting tired of catching up with each other’s lives.
~~~
The next few days, they went hiking, talked a lot more, and sat together until late at night, sometimes early in the morning.
On the night before the Golden Globes ceremony, they were eating outside on the terrace again, savoring the unusually warm weather for January.
“I can’t wait meeting the Hobbits.” Orlando was enthusiastic about their reunion, which was supposed to go down the day after next.
“Even though Dom’s living so close, I don’t nearly see him enough. There’s always something going on, so that we had to cancel a few of our scheduled meetings.”
“Yeah, I haven’t seen any of them for quite a while,” Viggo concurred.
“We had such a good time, back in New Zealand. I’m really missing it,” Orlando murmured. “Do you remember that night we all slept outside around the campfire? You had the best ideas. It was really a magical night; it almost felt like we were able to stop time and keep those moments alive forever.”
“Of course I remember that night. How could I forget? Everyone was so content, everyone got involved. It was definitely magical. And you were…” Viggo bit his tongue.
“Hm?” Orlando turned his head and looked at Viggo questioningly, and – it seemed – with hope in his eyes.
“You were…” Viggo had to swallow. “You were looking so beautiful.”
Orlando gave a self-conscious laugh. “No, I wasn’t…”
He turned his head away and looked at his feet.
“Yes, Orli, you were. You are… But I didn’t make myself clear enough. You were looking so beautiful because you seemed so peaceful, so at ease with everyone around; almost like you finally found your place… I don’t know how to describe it differently. I’ve barely seen you looking like that again. It just makes you so beautiful in those moments…”
Viggo saw how Orlando was shaking his head, a light blush on his cheeks.
“No, I don’t think…”
Holding out his hand, Viggo interrupted him. “Come here, Orli.”
Startled, Orlando looked up, and, seeing that Viggo was waiting for him to take his hand, he hesitated.
“Are you sure that…”
“Come here, Orli. We’ve wasted enough time, don’t you think?”
Orlando took a steadying breath, contemplated this for a second, and then took Viggo’s hand.
Viggo pulled him onto his lap, gently caressing Orlando’s cheeks. “Don’t you think we have wasted enough time over the years?”
Instead of giving a verbal answer, Orlando leaned forward and kissed Viggo. Then he softly bumped their foreheads together, closing his eyes and sliding his hands around Viggo’s neck.
“You’re right. We have wasted more than enough time. I always thought there was something between us, some sort of magic. And sometimes, when I was alone at night in the following years, I had regrets about not exploring that.”
“Don’t… please don’t do that to yourself, Orli. It is what it is, and we can’t change the past…”
“I know. But we’ll change the future, right? We’ll try this?” Orlando sounded scared, looking at Viggo pleadingly.
“Of course we will! We will try to make this work, Orli, I promise you.” Viggo hugged him tight, giving him another kiss.
Orlando sighed and finally relaxed. “So, when do we start making sense of this?”
Viggo chuckled. He stroked Orlando’s back and said: “This doesn’t have to make any sense at all, as long as we both stick together.”
Orlando grinned at him. “Okay, then let’s start sticking together right now.” He unfurled from Viggo’s grip, gave him a peck on the lips, and started towards the house. “Last one in the bedroom’s gonna top!”
When he saw the mad glint in Viggo’s eyes, he started running, laughing all the way inside.
